Frequently Asked Questions:
How does Backyard Cat work?
Backyard Cat uses a simple but safe and effective method to deter your
cat from jumping. Backyard Cat uses a coated steal leash with a small
weighted bag clipped on one end with the other end attached to a harness.
The clips twist and turn to allow flexibility for your cats movements.
The bag itself is bendable and won't snag. Backyard Cat comes with a
standard adjustable harness. The cable is long enough to allow your cat
to sit upright without neck strain.
Your cat can walk and run with normal posture, but when she attempts
to jump, the weight will disturb her balance. Thus she won't want to
jump unless in harms way from another animal. Standing to sharpen her
claws on your new draperies will be unbalancing as well. She will only
be able to stand on her hind legs for a moment. View our video to see
for yourself how safe and effective Backyard Cat is for your pet.
Backyard Cat works by disturbing your cat's balance when she attempts
to jump. Backyard Cat doesn't prevent your cat from jumping but it takes
the recreation out of it. The entire Backyard Cat device, including
the cable, weighs less than one pound. Backyard Cat has been tested
under the supervision of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine for three years
and was exhibited at the annual Veterinary Conference at Texas A&M
University.

Why was the Backyard Cat created?
Sadly enough, thousands of stray cats are put down each year. They weren't
all strays. Many came from happy homes but wandered away. The collars
they wore may have been breakaway, so they were easily lost with no way
for them to be identified and returned home.
Backyard cat was developed so that cats can go outside in the safe
environment of your backyard. It deters the cats from jumping over the
fence. But they can still enjoy walking around the backyard, laying
under a tree or hunting for bugs and chasing leaves. The product was
developed simply because our own cats wanted to enjoy the outdoors and
we didn't want them to wander off and become strays.
How long should it take for my cat to get used to Backyard Cat?
If your cat is used to a collar she should quickly adjust to Backyard
Cat. Some cats require a few minutes to realize the difference and may
jump one or two times before they realize their new limitation. This
is why it is important to keep them under close observation through
the adjustment phase. Because the Backyard Cat cable is long enough
to drag on the ground, it doesn't apply any strain to the cat. The device
is about a pound. Cats are very smart and quick learners. They will
understand the training device. For an expert article on training cats,

How do I get started using Backyard Cat?
Backyard Cat is a training device. You must be prepared to work with
your cat to help it learn the acceptable behavior. Repetition is the
key to learning in humans and in animals. Most cats adjust very quickly
to the Backyard Cat. However, your cat may require more attention at
first. The principle is to watch your cat and allow it time to adjust
to the Backyard Cat device. You must first ensure that your cat is used
to a collar. Your cat might jump once or twice when you first put the
Backyard Cat on it. This is part of the training experience. Once they
experience the disturbance of balance they will resist the temptation
to jump.
What if my cat does jump?
Your cat might jump once or twice when you first put the Backyard Cat
on it. This is part of the training experience. Once they experience
the disturbance of balance they will resist the temptation to jump.
What if it makes noise?
Backyard Cat is made of a durable water resistant material. Backyard
Cat will make a slight rubbing noise when it moves a over concrete or
gravel. The noise isn't loud and your cat will soon adjust to it. Also,
we have found that the slight noise serves as a warning to birds in
the yard.
Is it uncomfortable?
Because the Backyard Cat cable is long enough to drag on the ground,
it doesn't apply any strain to the cat. The force of dragging is applied
along the length of their bodies.
What about older cats?
A cat's age isn't a factor in the success of Backyard Cat. Since it
is a training device it must, however, be used properly to achieve the
desired results.
What type of collar is included with the Backyard Cat?
Instead of a stadard collar, or a breakaway type collar, Backyard Cat uses a lightweight harness, providing a safe and secure alternative to a collar.
Should I leave it on all of the time they are indoors?
It will not be necessary to leave the Backyard Cat on your cat all of
the time. Backyard Cat is a training device and should be used to teach
your cat the acceptable behavior. Leaving it on for an hour at a time,
while under close supervision, over the course of a couple of days should
allow for sufficient behavior change so that you can stop the us of
the Backyard Cat device indoors. We do not recommend leaving it on your
cat permanently or when not under supervision.
How long before I can let my cat in my backyard with out Backyard
Cat?
Even though Backyard Cat is a training device we don't recommend allowing
your cat into your backyard without it, and without supervision. Unlike
indoor training, if the unacceptable jumping behavior returns it may
not be noticed.
We don't have a fence because we live in the country, will it still
work?
Backyard Cat is intended for indoor training and use in yards with appropriate
fencing only.
How might my cat react to the Backyard Cat product?
Cats who are used to wearing a collar may have many different reactions.
Some cats will lay still for a few minutes, unsure of what is happening.
Others will attempt to hide from the Backyard Cat harness. Others will
try to run from it. All of these behaviors are expected from a highly
independent cats. You must allow your cat the time to adjust to the
presence of the harness. You may have to reconnect the Backyard Cat a
few times during your first training event.
Once my cat is used to the Backyard Cat what should I periodically
look for?
Make sure the harness is not too tight and that there are no holes under
the fence.
Does it matter if my cat is declawed or still has claws?
Cats that have claws will climb instead of jump. We suggest using a
heavier weighted bag, just enough to deter jumping.
Is this product Inhumane?
Our cats love being outdoors. They go to the backdoor when they want
to go out and stay outside about 4 to 6 hours a day. I sometimes feed
them outside because they don't want to come in. The bag is NOT pulling
them or hurting them. The cats will learn that they can run and hunt
and jump a little, just not jump over the fence.
What if I get a bag and my cat is still jumping over the fence?
This means the bag is too light. You can order an extra weighted bag
which will come with a cable or return the Backyard Cat for a different
size.
What is the best way to order the right size?

weight and gender of your cat. We will tell you by email which size
will fit your cat best.
